Jesus “Chuy” Garcia

Our analysis looks at how candidates are using organic social media to reach out, communicate, and mostly importantly, engage with constituents. In this year’s mayoral election, we believe Jesus Garcia is leading the race in regards to social media.

Garcia has a great website. It contains information for voters about the campaign and affords visitors the opportunity to register as a volunteer or make a donation. The site contains buttons that connect with the campaign’s social media presences on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and more.

Garcia also uses Facebook most effectively. Friends can be bought online. For this reason, we prioritize how campaigns engage with their audience over the gross number of fans. Garcia’s fans engage with the campaign’s posts, like and often share them. He ranked the highest among his opposition in engagement scores and second in total number of fans. Finally, Garcia is the only mayoral candidate that has an Instagram account. This metric is weighted very lightly but shows something important – a confidence in young people. Instagram is undoubtedly the most used platform by the youngest generation of voters.

For these reasons, we have awarded Jesus “Chuy” Garcia with the highest score in the race (91%) and the only A.

  Metric   Score
  Website Score   100 %
  Facebook Score   84 %
  Twitter Score   68.75 %
  Instagram Score   100 %
  Total Score   91 %
  Grade   A

Bob Fioretti

Boxless would like to present an honorable mention to Alderman Bob Fioretti in the mayoral race. Fioretti also has a great website. In our opinion, it is the most aesthetically pleasing of all the candidates. It contains information for voters about the campaign and allows visitors the opportunity to register as a volunteer or make a donation. The site contains buttons connecting to the campaign’s social media presences on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

While Garcia performed best on Facebook, Fioretti clearly excelled in the use of Twitter. Twitter skews slightly to the younger, more urban, population. For this reason, it is weighted slightly lighter than Facebook in our study. Fioretti had the second strongest Facebook score.

For these reasons, we have awarded Bob Fioretti with a 82% cumulative score, a solid B (according to our scoring method).

  Metric   Score
  Website Score   95 %
  Facebook Score   63 %
  Twitter Score   90 %
  Instagram Score   0 %
  Total Score   82 %
  Grade   B

Rahm Emanuel

Our current mayor, Rahm Emanuel, has been successful online employing some great paid advertising strategies. When you compare Emanuel’s use of organic social media to that of his running mates, he is clearly trailing. Emanuel’s campaign has built a great website but hasn’t invested much time into maintaining his campaign Facebook or Twitter accounts nor does the campaign have an Instagram account.

According to many, Rahm is projected to be the forerunner in this election. It is disappointing to see his performance lack so much. However, organic social media is time consuming. I suspect that because Emanuel’s staff has more money than time, they have opted to invest in paid advertising over organic social.

For these reasons, we have awarded Rahm Emanuel with a 70% cumulative score, a solid C (according to our scoring method).

  Metric   Score
  Website Score   95 %
  Facebook Score   49 %
  Twitter Score   36 %
  Instagram Score   0 %
  Total Score   70 %
  Grade   C

Willie Wilson

Finally, Willie Wilson trails the other candidates in our mayoral election. Wilson’s website is strong. It contains everything that is should, except a link to an Instagram account – which he does not have. On Facebook, Wilson trails in engagements and number of fans but posts quite often. His Twitter presence also trails the competition. Where Wilson excels is in the number posts his team makes to Facebook and Twitter. While Wilson is not the leader, he is #2 in both of those areas.

For these reasons, we have awarded Willie Wilson with a 68% cumulative score, a C.

  Metric   Score
  Website Score   95 %
  Facebook Score   32 %
  Twitter Score   47.5 %
  Instagram Score   0 %
  Total Score   68 %
  Grade   C

Our analysis of this race is not meant to be an outcome predictor. Instead, it illustrates how the candidates are using social media to get their messages out. We adhere to standard debate standards of only including candidates with more than 3% of votes in pre-election polling.
